Death of the Ugg

The Ugg boot is well and truly dead. We saw its peak when worn by Kate and Siena after its launch in 2003. But its lowest point? – that has to be when recently worn by rock legend Ronnie Wood (particularly when sporting the mint green pair) and action hero Bruce Willis.

Tragically, the Ugg is not entirely dead, it still remains alive and kicking with the WAGS, sixteen-year-old backcombed haired toffs and the slummy mummy’s. However, would you ever take fashion advice from someone who tucks in tracksuit bottoms in to a pair of slippers?

But why are Uggs still going strong in these groups? Perhaps because they are the easy option; they are the slippers of the outside world, and are guaranteed to keep your feet warm in the cold winter months. However does this make up for their lack of style, ubiquitous nature and their ability to make you walk flat-footed? I think I’ll give them a miss.

Much to my bemusement the Ugg opening in London’s new Westfield shopping centre caused mass hysteria, so much so that doorman still have to control the flow of people every weekend.

I had a pair in 2004 whilst at University for the comfort and got rid of them after a year because I thought they were dated then. Perhaps Ugg wearers are hoping that they’ll come full circle again like wide-legged jeans, platform shoes and sequins. Word of advice, you store items that you perceive as having future fashion credentials, you do not wear them solidly until they come back in fashion!

What is your opinion on Ugg boots? Do you love or hate them?

  1. HATE. They're like a uniform at my uni - so so many orange, messy-haired blondes wearing tracksuits and Uggs. GET SOME STYLE, PEOPLE!!!!

  3. I have never liked uggs, my mum got me a fake pair that were shiny gold. I only wore them as slippers in the house as they were so warm... But I have always associated them to WAGS and people I wouldn't want to be associated with myself... So, I pretty much hate them.

  7. I know, why would you ever pay those prices for such an awful boot!? It never ceases to amaze me.

  8. I've never liked them, and can't believe they're even a subject today - how they've endured is beyond me. And the price - I had to look it up - £195. WHAT??? (Although far cheaper in North America.) Have you seen the florals? Just. Don't.

  9. 'sixteen-year-old backcombed haired toffs' are EVERYWHERE in my town! wearing their ugg boots, whilst thinking they look amazing with the same clothes that everyone else is wearing and their bright orange faces! ahh, it annoys me! haha.
I reaaaalllly dislike ugg boots - they are absolutely hideous!

(sorry about the rant, I get passionate when it comes to uggs!)

  10. I love them and always will. Personally, I think it's how you wear them. As long as your outfit looks good, the boots mesh well. If you're dressed...well, badly, then they're just going to make you look worse.

  11. I do hate them.... but I have to admit I actually own a pair. I was a private school kid back in the day - it was Uggs or social suicide! I refuse to get rid of them because they cost so much... so now they are just a very expensive pair of slippers. Never worn outside the house!

  16. I LOOOOOOOVE UGGS!! mainly because their so comfy and warm but THAN AGAIN i think one of my biggest complaints in regards to UGGS is that after awhile they really arent all that warm unless i wear socks with them and because its a flat bottem it hurts your feet after awhile.

    booo hoo
pooor uggs, but i still love them

  19. I'm currently living in LA. I think most of th eppl here thinks it's so fashionable esp when tucked in their tracksuits. I was walking around FIDM and saw a couple of students wearing that exact ensemble. How do I know they're students? well they have their big FIDM totes. What a disgrace for a supposedly fashion school.
