Ones to Watch in 2013

Happy New Year everyone! January isn’t renowned for being the happiest of months, after all who can manage to smile about returning to work after a long Christmas break, increased Underground fares (by 4%!!!) and a month of purging/exercise/sans vino. However, hopefully my top three highlights of 2013 will give you something to look forward to this year.

The Great Gatsby Poster

The Great Gatsby is the most hotly anticipated film of the year, what’s not to love about the glamour and hedonism of the roaring 1920s, a Baz Luhrmann remake, and a dashing Leo DiCaprio wooing Carey Mulligan in East Egg? Thankfully, after several delayed launch dates, the premier looks set to go ahead on 17 May.

Charlotte Simpson, Fashion 2013, Ones to Watch

Fashion-wise London is still very much the creative hub of up-and-coming young international talent. One designer that I can’t wait to see more from is Charlotte Simpson. Simpson is already leading the way in delicate embellishment with beautifully simple shapes and subtle translucent fabrics.

Kate Boy, Music 2013

Finally, you can’t expect to read an ‘ones to watch’ list without featuring any Scandi special guest appearances. The Nordics are on a roll right now with a plethora of must-have designers, unmissable Scandi crime dramas and addictive music. This year we expect the Swedish four-piece, Kate Boy, to become a staple on your iPod. They are already attracting quite a following despite barely releasing any information or photography about the band.

Hot 8 Brass Band, Sexual Healing

I have am currently playing this song for the fifth time in a row, and love it! Tune in to listen to the Hot 8 Brass Band play Marvin Gaye’s ‘Sexual Healing’. I thought that no cover would be able to do this song justice, however this definitely does!

Florence and the Machine Wears Gucci on US Tour

Florence and the Machine selected Gucci to dress her for her recent US tour. I've been meaning to write about this for a couple of weeks but have finally got round to it... Anyway, a huge round of applause is needed for head designer Frida Giannini for creating such beautiful dresses in Florence’s typical dreamy and ethereal style. Visually, the results were amazing: what a match made in fashion heaven!

Frida Giannini said of the collaboration:

"When Florence first came onto the scene, I was captivated by her eccentric style and her willingness to dare," says Giannini, "I felt there was such an authentic energy to her sound and her look. This was confirmed when I met her at the Grammys earlier this year. I used one of Florence's songs, 'Hurricane Drunk,' to set the mood for my Autumn Winter women's show, as she was truly an inspiration for this collection as a modern day icon with her cinematic allure and powerful presence."

Florence Welch responded:

"I was extremely flattered when I heard that Frida's collection had been inspired in part by my performances, and I was completely bowled over by her collection, the dresses seemed perfect for my shows, the colours, the shapes, the movement in the fabric. So it seemed natural that we work together on creating some pieces for my upcoming U.S. tour. I'm very grateful to Frida. It's been a wonderful experience, and I can't wait to get dressed for the stage!
